Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those...
The Lord's Prayer – this is probably the best-known prayer in Christianity.
It appears in the New Testament in both the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke. During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave instructions about how to pray, he included the line: ‘Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.’
This is somewhat in contrast to a quote in the Old Testament in Leviticus, which was the root of our now well-known expression ‘an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth’ which suggests that for every wrong done there should be a compensating measure of retribution. Jesus tackles this in the Gospel of Matthew, when he tells His disciples to turn the other cheek.
